How fantasy basketball trade values work
Basketball values start from per-game projections published by Sleeper: points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, made threes, turnovers, and shooting from the field and the line. What we do with them depends on how your league keeps score.
9-category leagues
In a 9-cat league, a player's job is to push your team ahead in as many categories as possible. We measure that with z-scores. For each category we take the players good enough to be rostered in a 12-team league with 13 players per team, find the average and the spread, and score each player by how many spreads he sits above or below average. Turnovers count against you. Field goal and free throw percentage are scored by impact: makes above what an average shooter would hit on the same attempts, so volume matters.
The nine z-scores are added up. We subtract the total of the first player outside the rostered pool, and the best player is set to 10,000.
Points leagues
Points leagues are simpler. We turn each projection into fantasy points per game with a common head-to-head setup: 1 per point, rebound and made three, 2 per assist, 4 per steal and block, minus 2 per turnover, plus 2 per made field goal and minus 1 per attempt, and 1 per made free throw minus 1 per attempt. Then we measure each player against the same replacement level.
Why rankings differ between the two formats
The same player can be a star in one format and ordinary in the other. Category leagues reward balance and efficiency, like a big man who blocks shots and hits most of his attempts. Points leagues reward volume, so ball-dominant scorers who also turn the ball over do better there. Switch the setting in the analyzer and watch the values move.

Basketball trade tips
- Values are per game. They assume the player plays. A star who misses 25 games gives you less than his value suggests, so check the injury tag and the news.
- Punting changes the math. If you have given up on free throws, a poor free throw shooter costs you nothing there. He is worth more to you than his value here.
- Watch the schedule late in the season. In head-to-head leagues, games played in your playoff weeks matter as much as per-game value.
- Trade before the deadline rush. Contenders pay most in the two weeks before your league's trade deadline.
